How to Stand Out on Your Next Virtual Interview

Attend a virtual interview exactly as you would an in-person interview.

The social disruption caused by the global health crisis that hit the world in 2020 has instantly changed various aspects of daily human lives. Among all the transitions that occurred, whether coerced or constructively commanded and complied to, working from home is perhaps one of those that came and happened instinctively. Consequently, remotely hiring new employees became the norm for most, if not all, organizations.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly shaped the trends in virtual recruitment. Needless to say, adapting to this new hiring process is indispensable both for the hiring managers and applicants.

Nonetheless, before you excitedly hit the ‘Apply’ button on that job board or the ‘Send’ button on your email after attaching your well-written resume with a well-thought Cover letter, get yourself open with some simple but are often overlooked tips to not only get by on your next interview but to stand out from the rest of the applicants.

NKR’s in-house recruiter shares invaluable reminders on how to get yourself afloat in the talent pool.

Look Presentable.

A study found that first impressions are so powerful that sometimes they can override the truth. A single glance at a person’s face could be sufficient to form a first impression. And you want your first impression to be great. This is not to say virtual recruiters are hypercritical. It only shows how important it is to put your best foot forward during the interview with the caution of not overdoing it. Looking presentable is not limited to your clothes, but to how you style your hair, the kind of makeup you wear, and the overall manner you carry yourself. Remember to dress for success. Although only your upper half is seen during a virtual interview, wearing a complete pair of pants or a skirt can add a feeling of professionalism, making you in the zone, ready to impress the interviewer.

Come Prepared

Coming prepared means you are ready to talk to your next potential employer. Avoid unnecessary interruptions such as noise that may interfere during your online interview. Technological know-how is necessary for virtual recruiting. The hardware equipment and software application should all be checked at least 30 minutes before the set time; that way, you have enough time to address any unnecessary technical issues. Make sure you are in a well-lit and conducive room.

Be passionate, poised, and precise

During the interview, make sure to demonstrate an interest in the job. You can do this not just by asking lots of questions but by attuning your answers to what the job requires while maintaining honesty. Make sure you understand the job roles and qualifications. You show this by doing company research. Your knowledge about the company can boost your confidence as you are already well aware of the qualifications they are looking for in a candidate. Lastly, keep your responses precise and concise while highlighting your relevant qualifications.

The world of work has been highly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Keeping yourself adaptive to the times can help you not only stand out on your next virtual interview but also land on your dream job, even from home.
